Nepal’s technology sector is developing steadily, with recent efforts focused on expanding digital services and improving access across the country.
The Government of Nepal has continued to promote its “Digital Nepal” initiative, aiming to modernise sectors such as education, healthcare, and public services through technology. Online platforms for government services, including document processing and tax payments, have seen increased usage in urban areas.
In the telecom sector, providers like Nepal Telecom and Ncell are working to expand 4G coverage, particularly in rural regions where connectivity has traditionally been limited. While progress has been made, network reliability and speed still vary significantly outside major cities.
Digital payment platforms are also gaining traction. Services such as eSewa and Khalti are being used more widely for everyday transactions, from utility bills to online shopping. Analysts note that the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this shift toward cashless payments.
However, challenges remain. Internet infrastructure in remote areas is still underdeveloped, and digital literacy continues to be a barrier for wider adoption. Experts say that without improvements in these areas, the benefits of new technology may remain concentrated in urban centres.
Compared to global tech leaders, Nepal’s progress is slower, but industry observers emphasise that growth is consistent.
