Home / Compare / MacBook Air M1 vs M2 Nepal
The M1 MacBook Air launched a new era for Apple laptops. The M2 improved the display, webcam, and design. But in Nepal, the price gap is NPR 25,000–35,000. Here's whether that gap is worth it for you.
Our Verdict
M1 for value. M2 if you can stretch the budget. For students, developers, and everyday users in Nepal, the M1 Air at NPR 85,000–105,000 is extraordinary value. The M2 is a genuine upgrade — better display, 1080p webcam, MagSafe — but the M1 handles every task just as well. Only choose M2 if the price difference is comfortable and the display/webcam improvements matter to you.

The M1 chip was a generational leap when it launched and remains genuinely fast in 2026. Xcode builds, Figma files with hundreds of frames, 4K video exports in Final Cut — the M1 handles all of it without a fan spinning up. The M2 is approximately 20-30% faster in CPU benchmarks and 35% faster in GPU tasks. In real-world use, most users won't notice the difference unless they're running heavy machine learning workloads or rendering large 3D scenes.
The M2 MacBook Air has a Liquid Retina display with a slightly larger 13.6" screen (vs 13.3" on M1), 500 nits brightness (vs 400 nits), and support for 1 billion colours. If you work with photos, video, or design — or you use your laptop outdoors — the M2 display is a meaningful upgrade. For coding, writing, and spreadsheets, both displays are excellent.
The M2 Air adds MagSafe 3 charging, which means you keep both USB-C ports free while charging. The M1 charges via USB-C only, so plugging in takes one port. For desk users with a dock, this doesn't matter. For laptop-on-the-go users who frequently plug and unplug, MagSafe is genuinely convenient — and it protects the laptop if the cable is accidentally yanked.
Both M1 and M2 are available with 8GB RAM, which Apple calls "unified memory." Because Apple Silicon uses memory very efficiently, 8GB on M1/M2 performs closer to 16GB on Intel Macs. For students, developers doing web work, and general productivity users, 8GB is sufficient in 2026. If you run virtual machines, keep 20+ browser tabs open constantly, or do heavy Premiere Pro work, consider 16GB. When buying used, 16GB configurations are rare — budget for what's available.

The MacBook Air M1 8GB/256GB is the best student MacBook in Nepal for 2026. It handles every app used in engineering, design, medical, and management courses. Battery life exceeds a full school day. The price at NPR 85,000–105,000 is far lower than new alternatives.
Is 256GB storage enough for a MacBook Air?
256GB is tight if you store large media files locally. For most users — students, developers, writers — it works well with cloud storage (iCloud, Google Drive) for larger files. If you work with large video projects or game libraries, 512GB is more comfortable.
Can I run Windows on MacBook Air M1 or M2?
You can run Windows on M1 and M2 via Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion (ARM versions). Native Boot Camp is not available on Apple Silicon. For most Windows compatibility needs, Parallels works well but adds cost.
How long will MacBook Air M1 receive software updates?
The MacBook Air M1 (2020) will receive macOS updates through approximately 2028 based on Apple's typical 7–8 year support cycle. It already runs macOS Sequoia (2025). Buying an M1 in 2026 gives you 2+ years of full software support.
